John and Elsa Johnson Home and Farm, Part 1
Birthplace of the Doctrine and Covenants in Hiram Ohio
While living with John and Elsa Johnson, Joseph Smith worked on the translation of the Bible and determined to publish the revelations that he received.
In September 1831, Joseph and Emma Smith moved about 30 miles south of Kirtland, Ohio, into the home of John and Elsa Johnson, located in Hiram township. Here they were provided rooms in which they could live and an upstairs office where Joseph and his scribe, Sidney Rigdon, could work on the divinely appointed translation of the Bible. In November of 1831, Joseph Smith calls for a conference to discuss the publication of the Book of Commandments.
